I have been attending scoliosis and back care classes with Mandy for several years, and the weekly routine has been incredibly beneficial for realigning my posture, managing back pain, and uplifting my spirits! The class includes a variety of poses and strengthening exercises. By the end of each session, I can feel my body has realigned and completely relaxed. I don’t think of myself as an “old lady” but, given I receive Medicare, I guess I am. I was an athlete through college and have remained very active since then…riding a bike, hiking, running, swimming, strength training…until arthritis and degenerative disc disease started causing chronic low back pain. I worked for years with trainers, did pt, received therapeutic massage but still, over time, was able to do less and less. Even bending over to load the dishwasher or make the bed was painful. A couple years ago, a friend told me about Mandy and her specialized training with back/spinal conditions. I’ve been going faithfully, twice a week, to her Back-safe Strength Training classes. She gives us good balanced upper and lower body exercises with a range of options for making them more or less challenging. Most importantly, she’s got eagle eyes for watching our alignment so that we don’t injure ourselves or perpetuate harmful patterns. I leave class feeling stronger (especially in my core), more open and upright and less locked up. Most importantly, I rarely use pain medication and, unless I over-do it, can move through my day doing what I want and need to do. – Mary B.
I loved your course. And I’m happy to report that all of what I remember to do from your class is keeping my tension patterns relieved and spine pain-free! My spine is stronger and better posture is maintained without getting so tired and tense! I traveled last weekend 3 hours in the car, then slept on not ideal bed for 2 nights and walked for hours and sat on hard chairs for hours! Amazing, I could enjoy myself through the long days and social late nights and keep a thread of awareness on my spine! And of course applied the back-care floor and wall exercises each morning. That was a great test for me to realize how much the knowledge of my unique spine patterns can be managed! ~ Jennifer T.
When I moved to State College I was experiencing more pain and weakness from my scoliosis than ever before. I have been taking two specialized classes at Wellness in Motion for the past 4 months: Yoga Therapy for Scoliosis and Yoga Therapy for Backcare. I’m able to move more freely and with less pain. Mandy’s Yoga for Scoliosis classes have transformed my experience of yoga and my knowledge of scoliosis. With Mandy’s help and encouragement, I have learned to apply principles that move me out of unconscious habits and into greater strength, balance, and alignment.
